Bettys early years were spent on the family farm located on Ochs Road near Endicott and she attended the two-room school house in Diamond, Washington. After her family moved to Endicott, Betty attended the Endicott schools and graduated from Endicott High School, class of 1947. During high school, Betty worked for Fred Wilkinson at the Endicott Pharmacy. After graduating from high school, Betty moved to Colfax, Washington where she worked at St. Ignatius Hospital for a short time. She moved to Spokane, Washington and attended Kinman Business School where she acquired her secretarial skills. After Betty graduated from business school, she worked for Bell Telephone and later for ACME Concrete. Betty and George were married on July 7, 1951 and George was deployed to England a few months later. After George returned from England and their son Craig was born, Betty became a stay-at-home mom, focusing her attention on caring for her growing family. She was active in PTA, church and community endeavors. Betty managed the familys finances, including managing the budgets for the nine family homes George built, or remodeled over the years. At times she worked as a carpenters helper for George, even acting as a hod carrier at times when he was laying bricks. Betty returned to college in the mid 1960s, attending Spokane Community College, Spokane Falls Community College and Eastern Washington College. She graduated from Eastern Washington College with high honors in June 1970, attaining a degree in elementary education. Betty was a lifelong gardener and loved watching the birds in her garden. She also discovered the joy of quilting and became an avid and prolific quilter in her mid-60s until her mid- 80s when arthritis forced an end to that activity. Above all, Betty loved her family and there was nothing she wouldnt do for her beloved husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and George rarely missed an opportunity to visit siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces as they traveled the country over the years.
