Doris Woodward Obituary Doris J. Woodward passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 19th. Doris was born in La Grange, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, on March 18, 1928, and graduated from Michigan State University in Lansing. Her parents were Edgar and Carolyn (Fletcher) Woodward. After marriage, she later lived in Baltimore, Maryland; Santa Monica and Malibu, California; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington. Doris moved to Spokane in 1962. She was a true historian, researcher, and author. In 1984, she joined the Eastern Washington Genealogical Society and was journal editor for 25 years. She was on the editorial board of the Spokane History Book Committee for a decade, and also Spokane Corral of Westerners. She was also a longtime member of the Spokane Police Department History Book Committee. Through all of these activities, her life has been enriched by all the material she has been privileged to read and research, and her knowledge of Spokane and the Northwest has been enriched enormously. Doris was also a member of the Maine Genealogical Society, the First Families of Maine, the Essex County and Newbury Genealogical Societies in Massachusetts, and has been a member of the Jonas Babcock Chapter DAR since 1997. Doris has compiled and written many articles in journals for the National Genealogical Society, the Maine Genealogical Society, the American Genealogist, and Ancestry magazine, and has received several awards for her work. Her areas of interest are primarily Maine, Massachusetts, and New York City. She has had the opportunity of visiting those areas and doing on-site research. She also published several books and edited many more. Doris was also a longtime member of the Spokane Dog Training Club and was an American Kennel Club Licensed Superintendent and worked for Brown Dog Shows in Spokane. They handled most of the dog shows and obedience trials in Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Washington. Doris also loved to play bridge and work in the garden, writing, research, editing, knitting, sewing and embroidery. Doris was married to Scott Evans Gibb from 1953 to 1974. She was later married to Richard G. Renford from 1976 to 1987. Doris is survived by her daughters Nancy Gibb Martin, Natalie Gibb, and Beverly Jean Gibb; her son Scott Evans Gibb; three nephews, and three granddaughters. A service will not be held due to Covid. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
