Jan Lannigan

October 04, 1924 - December 23, 2018

Jan Lannigan Obituary Jan Lannigan was born Jeanette Banks in Spirit Lake, ID in 1924 to a railroading family, Harold and Heppie Banks. Her father was laid off in the Depression and could not find work other than occasional day labor for six years. Consequently, the family survived on meager food during much of her childhood. She graduated from high school at 16 to work in the War effort as a supply clerk. In 1945, she met a 19-year old hospitalized Army Airman, Lanny Lannigan, and married him within 6 months. They persevered through his education at Gonzaga University on the GI bill while raising a young family. Lanny was best known as the 20-year manager of the ONB, now the US Bank Building, and helping to bring skywalks to Spokane. Jan earned her AA in Accounting, worked in the field, and taught and helped administer a vocational school, OIC. They were active in Boy Scouts, PTA, Building Owners and Managers, and Rotary International. Their children are Dan, a well-loved teacher, now retired, and Kathleen, an educational writer. Jans husband, parents, two brothers, and most of her friends predeceased her. Throughout her life, she was revered by her extended family, including 6 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Hospice of Spokane and her family helped her to remain in her 1906 Summit Blvd home during her final illness, where she had lived for the last 60 years. Jan was a five-foot red-head whose wit and sense of humor are well storied. One of the best was her rescuing two burglars and policemen at OIC at four in the morning. The burglars had entered through basement windows, then the police entered that way when alarms went off, and all had gotten trapped. She was the emergency contact because she lived close by.
