February 24, 1926 - December 25, 2020

Leon Moss Obituary It is with great sadness that the family of Leon Moss of Spokane WA announce that he died peacefully on December 25, 2020 at the age of 94 1/2 years. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, and his four children: Aileen (Aaron), Brian (Brandy), Steven (Laureen), and Michael. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Joshua, Rachael, Jordan, Elliott & Ryan; nephew Victor Moss, brother-in-law Paul Atlas, and many other family members. Leon was born February 24, 1926 in Chicago to immigrant parents, Ada & Abram Moss. He grew up in Chicago as the youngest of seven children. Leon took pride in contributing to the family finances by working in the neighborhood grocery store while attending Tuley High School. Leon then enlisted in the Army during World War II and served in the air corps as a radio mechanic assigned to the 546th Bomber Squadron. He was a decorated soldier and was part of the occupying forces in Germany until mid-1946. Leon was recalled in 1950 as a reservist in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base. He obtained rank of Sergeant and left the service in 1951. He took great pride in being a War Veteran. Leon moved from Chicago to Los Angeles and became an X-ray Technician working at Cedars of Lebanon which later became Cedars of Sinai and other local hospitals where he X-rayed several movie stars/Hollywood Directors during his time there. Leon also studied and became a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine in the 1950s. However, he returned to X-ray and completed his career an X-ray Technician retiring from Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane Washington on February 24, 1994, his 68th birthday. That evening he received an additional retirement and birthday gift with the birth of his granddaughter. Leon met his bride, Phyllis Atlas, through his future mother-in-law. She was in the hospital for an x-ray and suggested he might want to meet her daughter, both were single. Phyllis was the love of his life, and they married on July 11, 1954 in Sierra Madre, California. They were married for 66 years. Leon was all about responsibility to his family and friends. He loved his family and was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. Leon was a hard- working family man who often took on extra shifts at the hospital to help raise his family. On the advice of an old army buddy, Leon and Phyllis moved their young family to Spokane in 1968. The two families have remained friends for many years. In 1969, Leon and Phyllis settled in the Spokane Valley, purchasing a 1908 farmhouse that was the original homestead for the Spokane valley. It remains the family home. Leon was a true gentleman. Kindness, thoughtfulness and integrity were hallmarks of Leons nature and he will be dearly missed. He often brought flowers to his wife and gave extra money to his children and grandchildren. His hobbies included listening to opera and big band music, playing the clarinet, stamp collecting, reading biographies and stories about WWII and following the stock market. Leon loved hot coffee and soup, deli, herring and a good pastrami or corned beef sandwich! He was a long-time and active member of Temple Beth Shalom. Leon lived a Jewish life, his essence and foundation. Leons family would like to thank the entire dedicated staff at Colonial Court Assisted Living Facility, who took wonderful care of Leon for almost three years; Horizon Hospice, Virginia Parker and his nurse, Mariah Murray for her dedication and care.
