Lt. Col. Richard Gordon Helmer Obituary (USAF Retired) Lt. Col. Richard Gordon Helmer passed away June 29, 2019. Dick was born on September 12, 1934 in Newport News, Virginia to George Frederick Helmer and Bessie Beatrice Helmer nee Gray. Dick had twin brothers, Robert and George Bernard Helmer, both deceased. After attending the College of William and Mary for a year, Dick was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force and flew as a radar navigator on B-47s and B-52s for many years at many Air Force bases. In 1966, he married Mary Ellen Thomas and they subsequently had three children, John, Elizabeth and George. Dick retired at Fairchild AFB in 1980 and returned to college, earning an MBA at Eastern Washington University. Dick is survived by his wife, Mary; and children, John Helmer of Spokane, Dr. Elizabeth Helmer Vincenzi of Arlington, WA and George Helmer of Lake Bluff, Illinois; as well as four grandchildren, Franklin Finn, Max, Emma and Josephine.
