Ronald "RC" Minor Costlow, 85, passed away on February 16, 2025, in Spokane Valley, Washington. Born on August 13, 1939, in Port Angeles, Washington, RC lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
From an early age, RC pursued his dreams with determination. At just 15 years old, he joined the National Guard and later enlisted in the Navy at 17. Though his time in the Navy was cut short due to a family emergency, he remained proud of his service and carried that sense of duty throughout his life.
RC's career was as diverse as it was distinguished. He began working in store management in Seattle and Alaska before following his passion for law enforcement. He completed multiple training programs, including the 10th Annual State Police Academy in Anchorage and the 14th Annual State Trooper Academy in Sitka. From 1967 to 1970, he served as an Alaska State Trooper in Anchorage, where he encountered countless adventures-some of which he later documented in stories. One of his most memorable experiences was rescuing a bear cub whose mother had been shot by a hunter. RC raised the cub until it became the official mascot of the Alaska State Troopers, affectionately named "Tuffy."
After his time as a trooper, RC continued serving his community as a Port of Seattle Police Officer from 1973 to 1977. He later became a Teamsters Union Representative before embarking on a new chapter as a business owner. From 1980 to 1989, he and his wife Bonnie owned and operated the Nordlig Motel in Chewelah, Washington.
Beyond his professional life, RC was a devoted family man who cherished time spent outdoors. He loved taking his family camping and boating and took great joy in teaching his son how to water ski. His adventurous spirit was matched by his deep sense of justice - he was known for standing up for what was right and fighting for others without hesitation.
RC is survived by his children: Chris Costlow (Tianii), Shelley Costlow-Empson (Dennis), and Jennifer Johnson; grandchildren: Jason Costlow (Jeanae), Daniel Costlow, Kyle Costlow (Polina), Katie Johnson, Justine Johnson, and Alaska Johnson; six great grandchildren; his sister Karen Jackson; sisters-in-law Susan Costlow and Nannette Tomsha; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bonnie Costlow; parents Pat and Alaska Costlow; brothers Jack and Donald Costlow; cousin Larry Connelly; and granddaughter Kassandra Costlow.
RC's legacy is one of courage, resilience, and an unyielding love for life. His son Chris reflects on their bond with gratitude: "My Dad was a man of adventure - not afraid to take on anything. He stood up for justice no matter who you were. I know that's where I get my love of life and my passion for helping others. I will miss him deeply and remember all the good times we had."
His dear friend Kacy Carlson shares: "'RC' was a terrific, talented, handsome guy. We met unexpectedly late in life, became great friends sharing common interests sometimes tears-and lots of laughter. His passing creates a painful void for so many."
RC's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. May his adventurous spirit continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to share in his journey. Ron and Bonnie will now be together forever on their journey celebrating their 66th Anniversary on February 27th.
A graveside service will be held at the Washington State Veteran’s Cemetery in the Spring.
